Determinants of Overall Health
Health, as defined by the World Health Organization, is a state of full physical, mental and emotional well-being with no limitations. Various definitions have been employed over the years for various purposes. Some doctors and researchers use standard criteria developed by the World Health Organization, which includes: the ability to carry out the activities of daily living; a fair level of personal knowledge and capacity for health care; a well-balanced relationship with people and resources; and appropriate social and ecological support.
The definition of “mental health” is the ability to experience well-being that involves emotions, the capacity to interact constructively with others, and an overall sense of well-being. On a global scale, mental health has become an increasingly important issue for many Americans as the aging Baby Boomers moves from the stable, professional lives of their parents to the many uncertain experiences of retirement. The aging process changes everything in a person’s life including their mental health, and this change can have a profound effect on their ability to maintain quality interactions with others. Seniors are the most at risk for poor mental health because they are more likely to encounter stressful life events and difficulties. These changes can lead to more problems like: depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and other mood disorders.
In order to have a healthy and socially well-rounded life, you must be healthy emotionally and socially as well. Emotionally healthy individuals are able to live satisfying, active lives that give value to themselves and to others. On the other hand, emotionally healthy people are not only capable of managing their emotions effectively but also of dealing with challenges in the workplace and society. They do not rely on others to provide them with motivation or approval, and they take pride in making and keeping friends.
To have a healthy mental state, you must be physically healthy. Regular physical activity keeps your body functioning properly, while relaxing your mind. When a person becomes too sedentary, he or she may experience lack of energy, have poor concentration, experience fatigue, and have a hard time coping with chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes. Chronic illnesses such as asthma and cardiovascular diseases can lead to serious health problems that can lead to death if proper care is not taken. As a matter of fact, chronic illnesses are the leading cause of disability. If you do not take part in regular physical activities, you will not be able to maintain the ideal weight for your body type, and you may become obese, which can lead to serious medical issues, including heart disease, arthritis, kidney disease, and other types of diseases.
Social wellness involves improving your interpersonal relationships through education, interaction, and mentoring. This way, you become more aware of your relationship with other people, their health, and their need. It is also important to interact with the community to solve problems and build better relationships with each other. The overall health and happiness of a society depend on how healthy its individuals are. Public health educators play a key role in promoting social wellness by promoting community organizations and awareness programs such as neighborhood watches, neighborhood education drives, and community events that promote positive social environments.
In conclusion, there are three primary determinants of overall population health: physical health, mental health, and social wellness. Improving your lifestyle through exercise, eating healthy foods, maintaining a healthy weight, and using public health and community programs can improve your physical and mental health, while decreasing the risk of common chronic diseases. In addition, it can decrease the risk of premature death through preventative measures and lifestyle counseling.
